ABOUT
THIS SITE
Like all families, the Nemenoffs have a long history and a
complicated family tree. On one side there are the Glick, Epel, Neipris and Nachemson
families that originated in Lithuania and Latvia, principally in the
small border town of Latskova. One of the Glicks,
Rachel, married a Nemenoff named
Ben, who was from a town called
Dashkofski in Belarus. The Nemenoffs (or Nemerovs) lived
primarily in Belarus and probably Ukraine. Ben and Rachel met
and married after immigrating to Montreal and ultimately settled in
Chicago, where they raised
their family. Other national and ethnic lines married into
the Nemenoff family over the years, including the Nelsons of Norway,
the Greenholtzes of
Tomashev, Poland (near Lodz) and the Pickings and Burrells of
England, Scotland, and Canada.

Much research has been conducted on the Glick, Epel, Neipris and Nachemson
families, mainly by extended family members Judith Diamond (of
London) and John Drayman (Los Angeles). Much of the
information they have gathered was used in this site. The true
mystery man is Ben Nemenoff and research into his life has ultimately led to
the development of this site. The details of his life were,
and largely still are, unknown. He died in 1929 when many of
his children were too young to have many memories of him.
Details that have been gathered are largely from American documents
such as his death certificate and from the memories that do exist in
the mind of his youngest son David. Efforts are currently
underway to acquire whatever data is available in the national
archives of Canada and Belarus, as well as from the many
genealogical societies that focus on research like this.
The purpose of this site is to detail as much as possible the people
who comprise the Nemenoff line. The family story can be dated
back to the early 19th century with
Selig Glick and
David Nachemson. Selig's
grandson Hirsch married David's
daughter Pesche. Their
daughter Rachel married Ben Nemenoff, and started that line in
America.
Theirs are stories of our past, and our past is prologue.
Today, there are descendents of this Nemenoff line living all over
the United States including Chicago, Kansas City, New York City,
Florida, California, and Reno, NV, among other places.
